What Does Freedom Mean to You?

We are coming on the Fourth of July this weekend and I was thinking about the various freedoms that we have and how thankful I am every day for them.  From the Freedom of Speech, the Freedom of Religion, the Freedom to Assembly and so forth.  I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me to have these freedoms especially in times where people are being persecuted for their beliefs.

That being said, how many people feel like that do not have the freedom to do what they want to on a daily basis?  This could range from feeling like you don’t have the personal freedom to do the things you want to do in your life, to financial freedom which includes the ability to become debt free and not have to worry about whether or not you are going to have enough money to retire.  One area that so many people worry about is will they have enough money to pay their bills, pay their rent or simply buy groceries.  Another area that people worry about is do they truly have the freedom of time, meaning do you have the ability to spend both the quality and quantity of time to be with your family and loved ones.  So many families are stretched thin with time to the point where they have little time to have dinner as a family unit or spend quality time with their loved one or spouse.  More families need to place their little ones in daycare because they feel that they have no other choice and spend an exorbitant amount of money paying for it.

When I reflect about all these freedoms, I have come to a point in my life where having not only the freedoms given to me by the country I live in, but having the ability to work on having financial freedom and time freedom is extremely important to me.  So, the question today centers around what type of freedom do you want in your personal life? When I reflect on my life, I want to be able to know that I have the ability to spend time  as much time with my spouse & close friends and not have anyone telling me or limiting me on what I can and cannot do.  I do not want to have a boss telling me when I can go on vacation and what time I can take my lunch.   I also want financial freedom and the peace of mind knowing that my financial future is secure.

So, as the Fourth of July approaches, I want to thank those who have fought and still fight for our freedom!!! I also want to always be cognizant of other freedoms that I want to have my life and center my goals on achieving them.

Setting Goals

I was thinking about how to get started on your roadmap to wellness and thought that goal setting is an important place to start. So, I thought that I would share with you my own thoughts about how to start on your journey toward achieving complete wellness:

1. Establish a long term goal – something that you want to achieve. You may want to be physically well or have financial security. Whatever you pick for your goal, be specific and write it down. Picture how it would feel to actually achieve this goal and what it would do for you.

2. Now write down what smaller steps you need to take to achieve your longer term goal. For example, many people want physical wellness and have goals to lose a certain amount of weight as a long term goal. The next step would be breaking that goal into smaller achievable goals such as going to the gym three times a week for a hour, drinking water on a daily basis and so on. The important piece of setting a short term goal is making it be measurable and specific. If you make a commitment to go to the gym, how many days a week are you going to go and for how long?

3. Put your short term goals into action. The important thing about writing down any goal is putting it into action which simply means, you need to do something every day to help yourself achieve that goal and inevitable achieve your long term goal.

The amazing thing about goal setting is that if you really focus on your goals and work on them every day, you will see results. Just remember to make sure that your goals are realistic and that you can break them down into smaller short term goals so that you can see movement toward your larger goals!!

So, spend a few minutes today thinking about what you want to achieve and where you want to start on your road to wellness.

The Roadmap to Complete Wellness

As I started on my own personal road to wellness, I had to make many decisions and finally decide what I want from my life and what I want to achieve. In our living room, we have a quote on our wall that simply states, “Life is a journey and only you hold the map.” I find this to be true because we are the only ones who can determine our destiny!! Of course, the road can be a little bumpy on the way but in the end, we get to where we are going.

There are many areas of wellness to focus on – just think of the possibilities – do you want personal wellness, physical wellness or financial wellness. It is likely that you want all three of these things but the question to ask is what area is most important to you in the moment. I know for me, I want personal wellness but the other areas are equally important to me and at times more important depending on where I am in my own life.

The good thing is that there are no right or wrong answers to the question. It may vary day to day! So, ask yourself, what do you want for you own life? What is important to you? Sometimes, I need to take an inventory of this and reflect on what I truly want. More importantly, I have to look at my long term goals and what short terms goals are going to help me get to where I want to go.

So, get ready, pull out your own personal map and enjoy the ride!
