Don’t let the fear of striking out hold you back.
~ Babe Ruth
Every once in awhile, I find a quote that simply sums up something that I want to say. Today, it is a quote from Babe Ruth – the home run king!! During the peak of his career, he had the most amount of home runs but also had the most amount of strike outs. His philosophy was that the more times you got up to bat to try and hit the ball, the more chances you had to hit a home run. He had the highest number of strike outs at one point in time but also had the highest number of home runs. Now I am not a baseball expert, but I think this is a great analogy when applied to goal setting.
One of the main reasons why people struggle with achieving their goals is FEAR!!!! Fear means False Expectations Appearing to be Real. If you think about it, fear can cripple a person to the point that they throw their hands in the air and give up on themselves. They believe something negative that they have convinced their mind to be true and stop trying. To be honest, I have made the same mistake at points in time in my life and allowed fear to shake me up a bit and ended up telling myself that I couldn’t do something. It amazes me how much a person’s mindset can impact a person’s thinking and inevitably whether or not they can achieve a goal or not. How many times do you hear a person say “I can’t do that” or “it’s too hard” or “I would never be able to do that because I’m not good at it.” In those instances, they have allowed fear to conquer them.
So, the question is, how do we erase fear and not allow our thoughts to stop us from doing something that we really want to do?
First, think about how you will feel if you were to achieve your goal. Imagine how wonderful it would feel, visualize it because if you can see yourself reaching your goal, then the likelihood of achieving it becomes real.
Second, write down how you are going to reach the goal you want to achieve. Be specific and then develop up a plan to get there. If you start to become nervous or have fear, take a deep breath and remember how it will feel to achieve your goal.
Lastly, go out there and take that swing….and keep on swinging that bat until you reach your goal!!!!!
